How to Design Your App to Keep Drivers Safe
Many states have made it illegal to use your phone while driving. It’s usually advised that you stay away from your phone while in your car. However, many drivers still use apps that aren’t truly necessary for the road. Here are some design elements app developers should incorporate into their apps to keep drivers safe.
Keep Information Private
Being able to encrypt private information is a necessity for conscientious app developers. While app developers should be paid for their work, they can find ways to do that without selling user’s private information. Developers should also take precautions against hackers and various types of malware. While it is true that people will always want to find a key if there is a lock, continually improving the lock will make it more secure.
Detect When Users Are Driving
Apple phones have a feature called “do not disturb while driving,” which mutes incoming texts and calls when a car is in motion. This feature uses GPS to check your speed since it is logical that your pizza run won’t happen at 55 mph. The Pokemon Go app uses similar technology, topping out an average walking speed of 20 km/h, which roughly equals 10 mph. If you go faster than this speed, the app will not let you play unless you acknowledge you are a passenger. Even if you do this while driving, higher speeds do not allow the player to interact with the virtual world, which also solves the problem of distracted driving.
Offer Rewards for Focused Driving
If you want to encourage drivers to drive safely, encourage them with external rewards. Taking the example of Pokemon Go, you could encourage drivers to drive safely by offering a unique Pokemon after a certain amount of safe driving. However, because Pokemon Go is inherently focused on walking, it will likely not offer rewards for driving. Alternatively, you could offer safe drivers a discount on their paid services, like several insurance companies have begun to do.
You want drivers to drive safely and you should reward them when they do. Whether it is a unique item or coupon, people like to have their good behavior rewarded. Designing your app with this principle in mind can make your app more appealing and safe.
